While a heat pump requires minimal maintenance, there are aspects you should monitor to assess the system’s functionality. For a brine/water and water/water heat pump, it’s important to annually check or have the following checked:
- Water Pressure Monitor the water pressure in both the source and delivery systems.
- Expansion Capacity Examine the expansion tanks.
- Wiring Ensure all wiring is securely fastened and undamaged.
- Pipes Check for any leaks or signs of past leaks.
- Components Verify that all valves, compressors, pumps, etc., are securely attached. It’s best to leave this part to a professional inspector.
- System Menu Look for unusual notifications in the menu and confirm correct values are displayed.
- Operating Hours Compare these year-over-year to detect any unusual deviations.
- Compressor Starts and Stops
- Faults Retrieve and analyze recent fault reports.
- Electricity Consumption Check the power consumption of each phase.
As the name suggests, the delivery side of the heat pump is different from the air/air heat pump. In an air/water (A/W) heat pump, energy is still extracted from the ambient air and transferred to the heat pump. The heat pump itself, using a bit of electricity, produces the desired temperature and transfers it to central heating water. This water then flows to specific locations within the property, such as radiators or underfloor heating. This water has a lower temperature than water heated by gas in a central heating boiler. The delivery system, whether radiators or underfloor heating, must therefore be capable of comfortably heating (or cooling) the space with this low-temperature heating water. This necessitates good insulation.
The abbreviation SCOP stands for “Seasonal Coefficient of Performance”. It is a measure that describes the seasonal efficiency of a heat pump over an entire year, taking into account varying external temperatures and heating needs across different seasons. Unlike the COP, which provides a snapshot at specific conditions, the SCOP offers a more realistic view of the heat pump’s efficiency over an extended period.
COP (Coefficient Of Performance) is a performance coefficient used to express the efficiency of a heat pump at a specific condensation and evaporation temperature.
The COP is the ratio between the delivered energy (released heat) and the consumed energy (usually electricity). With a COP of 4, a heat pump will deliver 4 kWh of heat for every kWh of electricity consumed. The larger the temperature difference between the heat source and the heating system, the higher the energy consumption of the heat pump, and thus the lower the gain.
High Temperature Heating (HTH). This is the ‘traditional’ method of heating a building. In this method, central heating water, for instance at 80 degrees Celsius, is used. This is necessary to adequately heat a poorly insulated building. With good insulation, a water temperature of, for example, 35 degrees Celsius may already be sufficient.

The global HVAC industry has been in a constant state of evolution, with energy efficiency, environmental considerations, and technological advancements leading the way. Among the notable advancements in recent years is the shift in the types of refrigerants used in various systems, including the all-electric monoblock air-to-water heat pumps. Two of the prominent refrigerants making waves in this sector are R32 and R290. Understanding the differences between these two is crucial for consumers, industry professionals, and environmentalists alike.
R32 (Difluoromethane):
- Environmental Impact: R32 is a Hydrofluorocarbon (HFC), but unlike its HFC predecessors, it has a much lower Global Warming Potential (GWP). Its GWP is about one-third that of the common R410A, which has made it an attractive transitional refrigerant for the HVAC industry.
- Safety and Handling: R32 is classified as an A2L refrigerant, meaning it’s mildly flammable. However, its flammability risk in real-world applications, when handled correctly, is very low. Proper installation and service techniques can further mitigate these risks.
- Efficiency: R32 offers excellent thermodynamic properties, which results in high energy efficiency when used in HVAC systems.
- Charge Size: Typically, systems using R32 require a smaller refrigerant charge compared to those using R410A, which is beneficial in terms of potential refrigerant leakage impacts.
R290 (Propane):
- Environmental Impact: R290 is a hydrocarbon, and its environmental footprint is even smaller than R32. It has an almost negligible GWP, making it one of the most environmentally friendly refrigerants available.
- Safety and Handling: Being a hydrocarbon, R290 is flammable. But, due to its natural composition, it does not contribute to ozone layer depletion. It requires careful handling, especially during installation and servicing. Proper safety protocols and training are essential.
- Efficiency: R290 exhibits outstanding performance in terms of energy efficiency. When applied in suitable systems, it can lead to significant energy savings.
- Charge Size: Systems using R290 often operate with a very low refrigerant charge, which can further reduce the potential environmental impact in case of leaks.
In the context of all-electric monoblock air-to-water heat pumps, the choice between R32 and R290 largely depends on specific application requirements, regional regulations, and environmental considerations. Both refrigerants signify a shift towards a greener and more sustainable future in HVAC, but the specific choice between them should be made considering the broader context of efficiency, safety, and environmental stewardship.

Efficiency: These systems are often highly efficient, particularly when compared to traditional heating systems. They can provide significant energy savings, reducing costs in the long run.
Simplified Installation: Unlike split systems, which require both indoor and outdoor units, the monoblock consists of a single external unit. This often simplifies and speeds up the installation process.
Space-saving: Given the monoblock design, there’s no need for an indoor unit, meaning less space is required for installation, and there’s less visual intrusion inside the home.
Eco-friendly: Air-to-water heat pumps produce lower carbon emissions compared to traditional fossil-fuel systems, contributing to a reduced environmental footprint.
Versatility: These systems can often be used not just for heating but also for cooling during the summertime, making them useful year-round.
Lower Operational Costs: After the initial investment, the operational costs of an air-to-water heat pump are often lower than traditional heating systems, especially when you consider the energy savings.
Gas Independence: For homes aiming for gas independence, an air-to-water heat pump offers a viable and efficient solution.
Performs in Various Climates: Although efficiency can vary depending on the external temperature, modern air-to-water heat pumps are designed to operate effectively even at lower temperatures.
Considering that every home and situation is unique, it’s advisable to consult with a heat pump expert to determine if an air-to-water monoblock heat pump is the right choice for your specific needs.
